CNBC-TV18 Market HIGHLIGHTS: Indian shares tracked tepid Asian cues amid rising death toll and economic impact from the coronavirus epidemic in China. The 30-share benchmark S&P BSE Sensex ended over 160 points lower around the 40,900 mark, while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty50 also fell over 50 points to settle slightly lower below the 12,000 zone. The Nifty MidCap index fell 0.56 percent. Among stocks, Bharti Infratel, IndusInd Bank, Yes Bank were the worst hit.  Here are the major highlights from the stock markets today:

Mutual funds (MF) were net sellers in energy, IT and financial services, while they bought ‘high beta’ sectors like telecom, private banks, consumer discretionary and utilities in January 2020, according to a report by ICICI Securities. Meanwhile, Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPI) bought and sold a mix of defensives and cyclicals. FPIs bought energy, IT, telecom and auto stocks while sold consumer staples, banks and utilities during the month.

SP Tulsian is confident that Vodafone-Idea will not defy the Supreme Court order and may payments of Rs 15000-20000 crore.

The Nifty MidCap 100 index lost 0.56 percent, while the banking gauge, Nifty Bank declined 0.39 percent.
