Sector Update: Health Care Stocks Decline Late Afternoon

03:52 PM EDT, 10/02/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Health care stocks fell late Wednesday afternoon with the NYSE Health Care Index down 0.3% and the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) dropping 0.2%.

The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) eased 0.1%.

In corporate news, Eli Lilly ( LLY ) plans to spend $4.5 billion to open a manufacturing and development center in Lebanon, Indiana, that will support treatments from research stages through their entry into clinical trials. The shares rose 0.6%.

Establishment Labs ( ESTA ) shares jumped 11% after the first patients in the US received breast augmentations with Motiva implants.

Humana (HUM) said the number of members enrolled in 2025 Medicare Advantage plans with a quality rating of at least four stars is expected to plunge, likely affecting its 2026 revenue and bonus payments. The shares tumbled 12%.

Eagle Pharmaceuticals ( EGRX ) shares plunged 45%. The company said it's in default under a credit agreement after failing to meet certain reporting requirements and plans to discuss the matter and related issues with lenders.
