Sector Update: Health Care Stocks Ease Late Afternoon

03:59 PM EST, 03/08/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Health care stocks eased late Friday afternoon with the NYSE Health Care Index decreasing 0.4% and the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) down 0.1%.

The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) rose 0.2%.

In corporate news, Novo Nordisk ( NVO ) said Friday it received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for Wegovy's expanded indication to reduce cardiovascular risks in adults with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease. Separately, Novo Nordisk ( NVO ) plans to offer the pill version of its experimental weight loss drug amycretin this decade, Reuters reported Friday, citing Martin Holst Lange, the company's head of development. The stock fell 2%.

Pulse Biosciences (PLSE) rose 2.1% after the company secured clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for its CellFX nsPFA Percutaneous Electrode System for use in the ablation of soft tissue in percutaneous and intraoperative surgical procedures.

Eli Lilly (LLY) shares fell 2.4% after the company said the US Food and Drug Administration will call an advisory committee meeting to discuss the phase 3 trial of donanemab in early symptomatic Alzheimer's disease.

Amylyx Pharmaceuticals (AMLX) plunged 82% after the company said its phase 3 trial assessing AMX0035 in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis failed to meet the primary and secondary endpoints.
