The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) advanced 1.4%.

In corporate news, AstraZeneca ( AZN ) shares rose 2% after it said Tuesday its Imfinzi in combination with standard chemotherapy was approved in the US to treat adults with early-stage and locally advanced gastric and gastroesophageal junction cancers.

Humana (HUM) filed a notice Tuesday to appeal an October court ruling that upheld its reduced Medicare quality bonus payments. Its shares climbed 3.5%.

Novo Nordisk ( NVO ) said Tuesday a phase 2 trial of its experimental drug amycretin in people with type 2 diabetes showed reductions in weight and HbA1c or average blood sugar. Novo shares jumped 4.5%.

Select Medical ( SEM ) shares jumped past 11% following a take-private proposal from its executive chairman.
