Sensex ends lower, Nifty holds 11,600; realty, banking, metal slip

The Indian market ended lower on Monday with the Nifty barely holding 11,600 levels, dragged by losses in banking, realty, metal and energy sectors.

Traders in India will watch out for March quarter corporate earnings beginning this week, with IT majors TCS and Infosys reporting their numbers on April 12. Also, the first phase of general elections will take place later this week.

The S&P BSE Sensex ended the day at 38,700, down 161 points, while the broader NSE Nifty50 was settled at 11,604, slipping 61 points. Broader markets were in-line with frontline indices with Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap indices falling 0.7 and 0.5 percent, respectively.

Tech Mahindra, Infosys, TCS, M&M and PowerGrid were top gainers on Nifty, while Indiabulls Housing Finance, IOC, Bajaj Finance, Vedanta, Yes Bank, and Tata Motors fell the most.

All sectoral indices, except Nifty IT, were trading in the red. Nifty Realty fell the most followed by banking and financial services and metal.

Nifty Realty declined over 2 percent with DLF, Godrej Properties, Phoenix, Oberoi Realty down between 1-8 percent.

NIIT hit the upper circuit with 20 percent gains after Baring Private Equity Asia (BPEA) acquired its stake in NIIT Technologies. NIIT Tech fell 3 percent on the announcement.

Lakshmi Vilas Bank hit an upper circuit as Indiabulls Housing Finance is looking to merge with the bank. Indiabulls Housing Finance, on the other hand, was down over 4 percent.

Hindustan Petroleum Corp and Indian Oil Corp were among the top percentage losers on the NSE index, shedding 4 percent each. Nifty Energy Index also fell over 1 percent.

Globally, Chinese blue chips initially climbed to territory not visited since March last year, only to fade 1 percent as the session wore on. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan went flat having reached its highest since August. Japan’s Nikkei was off 0.1 percent after reaching its high of the year so far.
