Sensex, Nifty open lower as trade war worries weigh; Wipro, Bharti Airtel top losers

Equity markets opened in the red on Friday amid US-China trade war concerns although rupee strengthened in the opening trade.

The BSE Sensex lost 30.89 points, or 0.09 percent, falling to 35,543.66 at 9.15 am, while the NSE Nifty 50 was trading lower by 5.60 points, or 0.05 percent, at 10,744.15.

The indexes gained afterward with the Sensex rising by 70 points to 35,644, while the Nifty climbed to 10,767 at 9.36am.

Shares of Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Infosys, Reliance, Yes Bank, BPCL, HPCL, were among top gainers on both indexes, while Wipro, Bharti Airtel, NTPC, HDFC, Coal India, Titan Company, Zee Entertainment, Bharti Infratel were the laggards in early trade.

Nifty Midcap and Smallcap were trading marginally higher, while sectoral indices were trading mixed on the NSE.

Nifty Realty was up by 1.11 percent. BSE Midcap and Smallcaps were also trading marginally higher, while among sectoral indices on the BSE, realty gained the most by 1.23 percent. BSE Auto and Oil & Gas were also trading higher nearly a percent.

Shares of Hathway Cable were down by 8 percent in the opening trade today, extending Thursday’s losses after Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani unveiled JioGigaFiber at the 41st AGM of the oil-to-telecom conglomerate. Shares of Den Networks and Siti Networks were down by 4 percent and 5 percent respectively.

The Sensex had snapped its two-day winning streak to end about 71 points lower at 35,574.55 on Thursday, while the Nifty ended at 10,749.75. The Indian rupee strengthened on Friday, opening at 68.88 against the US dollar. It had closed at 68.94 against the dollar on Thursday.

Asian markets are trading mixed at 9.41 am IST with the Nikkei trading higher by over 150 points to 21,705, while Hang Seng is down by almost 174 points to 28, 009.

Markets in Europe and the US advanced on Thursday as reassuring economic data from Germany and a report that its big carmakers could be spared from US tariffs offset another gloomy session for Asia, Reuters reported.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 120.06 points, or 0.5 percent, to 24,294.88, the S&P 500 gained 16.33 points, or 0.60 percent, to 2,729.55 and the Nasdaq Composite added 59.42 points, or 0.79 percent, to 7,562.09, Reuters added.
