Sensex, Nifty sustain gains; M&M, ICICI Bank, HDFC among top gainers

The Indian market maintained gains on Tuesday on sustained buying across the sectors as macro concerns eased. Investor sentiment also remained upbeat ahead of corporate earnings of Infosys later in the day and a day ahead of index heavyweight Reliance Industries' Q2 results.

The BSE Sensex traded 205 points higher, at 35,070 at 11.45 am, while the NSE Nifty50 was trading at 10,561, up by 48 points. After opening at 35,004, the 30-share index touched the day's high at 35,215. The Nifty touched the day's high of 10,605, after starting at 10,550.

Broader indexes also sustained gains, although off from the morning's highs. The Nifty MidCap traded higher by 0.74 percent and the BSE MidCap was up by more than half a percent.

Sectoral indices traded positive with Nifty PSU Bank rising 1.38 percent, ahead of Federal Bank's Q2 earnings. BSE Telecom, basic metal, industrials were among other major 39 sectoral gainers, while Nifty FMCG dipped the most by 0.47 percent among 4 declining sectors. Nifty Bank traded positive, up by 0.67 percent.

Gainers included M&M, Bharti Infratel, ICICI Bank, ONGC, Axis Bank and HDFC, rising by up to 3 percent. The laggards were Cipla, HPCL, ITC, NTPC, HCL Technologies, PowerGrid, Wipro and Sun Pharma, trading lower by up to 1.53 percent.

The Indian rupee traded at 73.91 against the US dollar, after opening slightly higher at 73.80.
