Oil will probably remain reasonably strong: Westminster Asset Management's Jonathan Schiessl

Jonathan Schiessl, Deputy CIO of Westminster Asset Management, expects oil to "probably remain reasonably strong". However, in the very short term, easing oil will certainly take some inflationary pressure off the Fed and other central banks to ease rates, he says.

"Clearly, oil at the moment is certainly pricing in or beginning to price in something happening in Ukraine, which, if doesn't happen, could easily send the price falling by $10-15 per barrel. Now, we're certainly not going to go back to $60 a barrel because we all know the issues within under investment in the sector over the last few years," he adds.

Weakness or volatility in H1 2022 should be used to buy on dips: Edelweiss MF's Trideep Bhattacharya

Trideep Bhattacharya, Co-CIO (Equities) at Edelweiss Mutual Fund, says he was always constructive on equities for 2022 but also well prepared for volatility. Weakness or volatility that we see in equities in the first half should be used as an opportunity to buy on dips but in tranches.

He is positive on a rebound in credit growth in the banking space over the next 1-2 years, and corporate-facing lenders in particular than those that are just retail-facing. "Between banks and NBFCs, we are relatively more positive on banks and that's how most of our portfolios are stuck at the moment. We are certainly in those cases where we still have room to add; we are using the dips to add," he says.

ITC a strong bet, long-term target Rs 400: Equity99's Rahul Sharma

Rahul Sharma of Equity99 Advisors is bullish on ITC with a short term target of Rs 245-260 and a long-term goal of Rs 400. ITC is a strong stock with a great dividend record that one can add in such a volatile market, and the diversified multi-business conglomerate has always remained an attractive dividend bet for investors, he says.

This is with promising long-term growth prospects across multiple business segments, he says.

"The company has consistently declared strong dividends for the last five years. No tax on tobacco (in Budget 2022) and robust results have added faith to keep adding the stock to one's portfolio... Rapid growth in its FMCG business, improved break-even in hotels, the fast growing IT, paper and agri businesses along with the most profitable tobacco unit makes ITC a strong bet. Strong cash flows and cheery dividend payout adds to it," he adds.

LIC IPO | New investors' appetite to be high from given insurer's mammoth public brand value, says Vinod Nair

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, expects high demand for the LIC IPO from common and new investors given the company's mammoth public brand value. "However, in the long term, the end-demand and performance will depend on its future growth, profitability and sustenance of market share in the life insurance industry. In the short term, the valuation demanded by the government, and the discount provided to retail investors will define the success and performance of the offer," he says.

"We can presume a high demand or vice versa depending on whether the valuation demanded by the government on LIC’s embedded value is at discount or premium to industry average," Nair adds.

Market under pressure due to looming threat of war: Mohit Ralhan

Mohit Ralhan, Managing Partner at TIW Capital Group, says volatility has gone up with the increase in uncertainty over tensions between Russia and Ukraine. "The market is under pressure due to the looming threat of war. It is likely to have a short-term impact since the risk of actual war between two nuclear powers is quite limited. It is expected that the tensions will get dissipated through geopolitical manoeuvres over next few weeks, but market volatility will be high during this period," he adds.

Bears likely to pull Nifty further lower, crucial support at 16,680: Ajit Mishra

Ajit Mishra, VP-Research at Religare Broking, says global cues are now dictating the trend, and the prevailing geopolitical tension between Russia and Ukraine combined with a steady uptick in crude oil is not going well with the participants. "After weeks of consolidation, we feel bears are now in a more commanding position and likely to pull the index further lower. The Nifty has next crucial support around the 200-day exponential moving average of 16,680, and then 16,400. We reiterate our cautious view and suggest aligning positions according to the trend," he adds.
