14,100 posed a resistance and the markets turned red in a few minutes but the bullish undercurrent is so strong that the Nifty bounced smartly and has closed above 14,150. The next level we can aim for would be 14,200-14,250. But I would still advise caution on the long side with strict stops.

Domestic markets scaled higher after the country's drug regulator granted approval to two coronavirus vaccines for restricted emergency use. Strong GST collection numbers together with encouraging auto sales figures also boosted hopes of a swifter economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. Besides, the government's key decisions of stake sale of BEML and RCF also provided measures of higher revenue in FY21.

On PVR

It may be an interesting play for a year. I am not getting PVR at a level of price for me to be excited enough to buy it. I will wait for movie releases or dates to come about and then figure out what to do with PVR.

On Marico

Marico is more an international play than most of the other FMCG companies here. We are going to see some kind of revival in some of the other countries. I still think that is priced to perfection. From a valuation perspective, I would rather look at a business that can grow through more quantum leaps, the growth is more than 15-20 percent. Marico is probably limited to 15-20 percent on growth. It will be a good long-term story, I am just focusing on slightly more different growth-oriented businesses.

Gold hits eight-week high as tighter virus lockdowns loom

Gold prices started the new year on a high by notching an eight-week peak on Monday, as spiking COVID-19 cases and prospects of tougher restrictions boosted the safe-haven metal's appeal.

Spot gold rose 1.4 percent to $1,923.70 per ounce by 0750 GMT, having hit its highest since Nov. 9 at $1,925.29, while U.S. gold futures climbed 1.8 percent to $1,928.50.

Doubts about a swift global economic rebound rose after a business survey showed the pace of expansion in China's industrial sector slowed in December. Read more here.

Motilal Oswal on Automobile

Current demand momentum and low inventory in PV/Tractor suggest stronger wholesales in the coming months. 2W OEMs, on the other hand, are expected to maintain a cautious stance, with no major inventory push. CV is expected to see sustained growth hereafter. With pent-up demand largely fulfilled, it would be critical for demand to sustain in 4QFY21 and beyond, considering the expected price hikes as well as the opening up of public transport in many parts of the globe.

Current valuations suggest the recovery is likely to sustain (our base case), leaving a limited safety margin for any negative surprises. Hence, we prefer companies with: a) higher visibility in terms of demand recovery, b) a strong competitive positioning, c) margin drivers, and d) balance sheet strength. Mahindra & Mahindra and Hero MotoCorp are our top OEM picks. Among the auto component stocks, we prefer Endurance Technologies and Motherson Sumi Systems.
