Tea production down 18% in India; experts discuss challenges being faced by the sector
Nov 20, 2020 11:22 AM

India's tea sector has been on a rolling boil as far as price and demand is concerned. Moreover, the coronavirus related lockdowns and excess rains in West Bengal and Assam have pushed production 18 percent lower for the first eight months of the calendar year. This has led to a surge in production costs and high labour wages.

As India is the second largest producer of tea in the world and fourth largest exporter, it remains to be seen how these hurdles can impact the sector on a whole.

To discuss the issues plaguing tea production, CNBC-TV18's Manisha Gupta spoke to Prabir Bhattacharjee, Secretary General of Tea Association of India; Azam Monem, Whole Time Director at McLeod Russel and Parag Desai, Executive Director of Wagh Bakri Tea Group.
