Tobacco Stocks Fall as Attorneys General Urge Shopify to Stop Illegal E-Cigarette Sales

02:29 PM EST, 11/24/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Philip Morris ( PM ) and other tobacco stocks were lower in recent Monday trading after California Attorney General Rob Bonta and the City of New York, together with 23 other state attorneys general, sent a letter to Shopify ( SHOP ) urging the e-commerce platform to take action against merchants selling illegal tobacco products, particularly e-cigarettes.

The coalition, comprising 25 attorneys general, also requested a meeting with Shopify ( SHOP ) to discuss a more comprehensive approach to tackling unlawful online sales.

In their letter, the attorneys general identified 29 illegal e-cigarette websites hosted on Shopify ( SHOP ), provided a list of over 200 additional sites selling unlawful tobacco products, and offered to assist the company in identifying more illegal sellers through a cooperative agreement.

Shares of Philip Morris International ( PM ) fell 2.1%, British American Tobacco ( BTI ) declined 0.4%, and Altria Group ( MO ) dropped 1.1% in recent trading. Shopify ( SHOP ) shares rose 5%.

Shopify ( SHOP ) did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
