Top Cryptocurrencies Slump; Bitcoin Retreats to $56,000 Level

04:04 PM EDT, 09/05/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Most major digital assets slumped Thursday, with bitcoin (BTC-USD) retreating to the $56,000 level.

The CoinDesk Market Index, which tracks 134 digital assets, fell 2.6% in the past 24 hours. The Nasdaq 100 was down less than 0.1%, the S&P 500 dipped 0.3%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.5%.

Bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency, slumped 3.3% to just over $56,000 with a 24-hour trading volume of $30.3 billion, down about 17%, according to CoinMarketCap data.

Ethereum (ETH-USD), the second-largest digital asset, tumbled 3.7% to $2,357.

BNB (BNB-USD), the third-largest digital asset by market value excluding stablecoins, shed 2%, while Solana (SOL-USD), the fourth-largest, lost 3.4%.

XRP (XRP-USD) was down 2.6%, Cardano (ADA-USD) dipped 0.5% and Dogecoin (DOGE-USD) fell 0.7%.

The US 10-year Treasury yield closed at 3.727%, down from Wednesday's close of 3.767%, while the five-year yield closed at 3.537%, down from 3.565%.

The total market value of the cryptocurrency industry decreased 2.8% in the past 24 hours to $1.97 trillion. Trading volume shrank 20% to $60.65 billion.
