Shares sank past 18%, with intraday trading volume soaring to more than 21 million from a daily average of about 6.07 million.

Kroger ( KR ) reported fiscal Q1 adjusted earnings per share that narrowly missed analysts' estimates, according to an earnings statement on Thursday and FactSet-compiled data. Wells Fargo adjusted the price target for the company's shares to $58 from $68.

Shares dropped 8.4% as intraday trading volume jumped to 12.1 million from the stock's daily average of about 6.18 million.
