Top Midday Stories: DOJ Mulls Breakup of Google; Boeing Pulls Latest Offer to Striking Workers
Oct 10, 2024 10:17 PM

11:49 AM EDT, 10/09/2024 (MT Newswires) -- All three major US stock indexes were up in late-morning trading Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average leading the way, climbing 0.8%.

In company news, Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) is facing a potential breakup of its search dominance by the US Department of Justice, according to a Tuesday court filing. The DOJ is currently considering remedies such as contract requirements and prohibitions; non-discrimination product requirements; data and interoperability requirements; and structural requirements, the filing said. With respect to search distribution and revenue sharing, the DOJ is considering limiting or ending Google's ( GOOG ) use of monopoly profits, contracts and other tools "to control or influence longstanding and emerging distribution channels and search-related products," the filing said. Shares of Alphabet were down 1.7% around midday.

Boeing ( BA ) said Wednesday it withdrew its latest pay offer to striking workers following a breakdown in negotiations with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. The union did not "seriously consider" new proposals that included "increases in take-home pay and retirement," said Stephanie Pope, chief executive of Boeing's ( BA ) commercial airplanes division, in a message Tuesday to employees published on the company's website. Boeing ( BA ) shares were down 2.2%.

UnitedHealth Group ( UNH ) and CVS Health ( CVS ) want Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Lina Khan and two other FTC commissioners to recuse themselves from a lawsuit accusing the companies of increasing their profits via inflated insulin costs, CNBC reported Wednesday. In separate motions filed Tuesday with the FTC, the companies argued that Khan and Commissioners Alvaro Bedoya and Rebecca Kelly Slaughter have publicly expressed "serious bias" against pharmacy benefit managers, calling them "price gougers" that hold significant control over the pricing and access to drugs like insulin, CNBC reported. Shares of UnitedHealth ( UNH ) and CVS were up 1.1% and down 0.4%, respectively.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing ( TSM ) reported on Wednesday September revenue of $251.81 billion New Taiwan dollars ($7.82 billion), up 39.6% from the year-ago period. Year to date, revenue was NT$2.026 trillion, up 31.9% from the same period in 2023, the company said. Shares of the company were down 0.5%.

Tesla's (TSLA) sales of China-made electric vehicles increased 19.2% in September from a year earlier, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing data from the China Passenger Car Association. Deliveries of Tesla's China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles rose 1.9% from August, according to the report. Tesla shares were down 0.1%.
