Top Midday Stories: Microsoft Shares Fall After Soft Q3 Revenue Guide; UPS to Cut Amazon Business by 50%

12:29 PM EST, 01/30/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The Nasdaq Composite was down 0.2% in late-morning trading Thursday while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 were adding 0.2% as investors digested earnings reports from a number of large tech companies.

In company news, Microsoft ( MSFT ) reported fiscal Q2 earnings late Wednesday of $3.23 per diluted share, up from $2.93 a year earlier and above the consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by FactSet of $3.12. Fiscal Q2 revenue was $69.63 billion, up from $62.02 billion in the year-ago period and above the FactSet consensus estimate of $68.87 billion. The company said it expects Q3 revenue in a range of $67.7 billion to $68.7 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect $68.83 billion. Separately, Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed OpenAI is in talks for an investment of $15 billion to $25 billion from SoftBank, according to media reports. Microsoft ( MSFT ) shares were down 5.8% near noon.

Meta Platforms ( META ) reported Q4 earnings late Wednesday of $8.02 per diluted share, up from $5.33 a year earlier and above the FactSet consensus estimate of $6.76. Fourth-quarter revenue was $48.39 billion, up from $40.11 billion a year earlier and above the FactSet consensus of $46.99 billion. The company said it expects Q1 revenue between $39.5 billion and $41.8 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet expect $41.68 billion. Meta shares were up 2%.

Tesla (TSLA) reported Q4 non-GAAP earnings late Wednesday of $0.73 per diluted share, up from $0.71 a year earlier but below the FactSet consensus estimate from analysts of $0.77. Fourth-quarter revenue was $25.71 billion, up from $25.17 billion in the year-ago period but below the FactSet consensus of $27.26 billion. The company said Thursday it expects capital expenditures to surpass $11 billion this year and each of the following two years, according to a regulatory filing. Tesla shares were up 2%.

Mastercard ( MA ) reported Q4 adjusted earnings Thursday of $3.82 per diluted share, up from $3.18 a year earlier and above the FactSet consensus estimate from analysts of $3.69. Fourth-quarter net revenue was $7.49 billion, up from $6.55 billion in the year-ago period and above the FactSet consensus of $7.39 billion. The company said it expects net revenue growth in the ongoing quarter to be in the low-teens on a currency-neutral basis. For full-year 2025, Mastercard ( MA ) is projecting revenue to increase at the high end of a low-double-digits to low-teens range on currency-neutral terms. Mastercard ( MA ) shares were up 4.9%.

An American Airlines ( AAL ) regional jet collided in midair with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter Wednesday night near Reagan Washington National Airport, the US Federal Aviation Administration said. Washington, D.C. Fire Chief John Donnelly said Thursday in a press conference that there were no survivors, according to media reports. American Airlines ( AAL ) shares were down 2.1%.

United Parcel Service ( UPS ) reported Q4 adjusted earnings Thursday of $2.75 per diluted share, up from $2.47 a year earlier and above the FactSet consensus estimate among analysts of $2.53. Fourth-quarter revenue was $25.3 billion, up from $24.9 billion in the year-ago period but below the FactSet consensus estimate of $25.4 billion. For 2025, the company said it expects revenue of about $89.0 billion, below the FactSet consensus estimate of $95.0 billion. UPS Chief Financial Officer Brian Dykes said on an earnings call that the company has reached an agreement in principle with Amazon.com (AMZN) "to significantly reduce" the amount it delivers for them, setting a target of a 50% reduction by the second half of 2026. UPS shares were down 16.4%.
