12:01 PM EST, 01/07/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The Nasdaq and the S&P 500 were both down around midday Tuesday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was relatively flat as traders parsed newly released economic data.
The Institute for Supply Management's US services index rose to a reading of 54.1 in December from 52.1 in November, compared with expectations for a smaller increase to a reading of 53.5 in a survey compiled by Bloomberg.
US job openings rose to 8.098 million in November according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, above the 7.74 million openings expected in a survey compiled by Bloomberg and up from the 7.839 million openings reported in October. The November level represents 4.8% of total employment, up from 4.7% in October, but down from 5.4% a year earlier.
In equities, Nvidia ( NVDA ) shares were down 5% around midday Tuesday, retreating from the record closing high of $149.43 in the previous session. The company unveiled late Monday a personal supercomputer featuring its new GB10 chip, providing access to its Grace Blackwell platform for artificial intelligence researchers, data scientists and students.
Meta Platforms ( META ) named three new directors, including Dana White, president and chief executive of TKO Group Holdings' ( TKO ) Ultimate Fighting Championship and a supporter of US President-elect Donald Trump. In other news about the social media giant, Meta Platforms ( META ) said it will end its fact-checking program in the US and replace it with a Community Notes model. The company's shares were down 2% in recent Tuesday trading.
Apple ( AAPL ) executives held talks with Indonesia's industry minister to discuss a potential investment required to lift the country's ban on iPhone 16 sales, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing the minister, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita. Apple ( AAPL ) shares were down 0.6%.
UniFirst ( UNF ) shares rose 18% in recent Tuesday trading after the company said its board received and rejected Cintas' ( CTAS ) unsolicited and "highly conditional" offer to acquire all outstanding class B UniFirst shares for $275 per share. Cintas ( CTAS ) shares were up 2.8%.
Getty Images ( GETY ) and Shutterstock ( SSTK ) said Tuesday they have signed a merger deal to form a combined entity valued at about $3.7 billion. Shares of Getty jumped 23% and Shutterstock ( SSTK ) added 20%.
