Top Midday Stories: Shares Decline Amid Unease Over Israel-Iran Conflict; Retail Sales Fall More Than Expected in May

11:50 AM EDT, 06/17/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Eli Lilly ( LLY ) said Tuesday it has agreed to acquire Verve Therapeutics ( VERV ) for up to $1.3 billion in an effort to advance its gene-editing therapies for cardiovascular disease. Lilly will pay $10.50 per share in cash, with the potential for additional payments based on clinical milestones, the companies said. Eli Lilly ( LLY ) shares were down 1.5% around midday, while those of Verve were up 76.5%.

T-Mobile US ( TMUS ) shareholder SoftBank raised about $4.8 billion from the sale of 21.5 million shares of the wireless company at $224 apiece, according to media reports. The shares were offered in a price range of $224 to $228 each, Reuters reported, citing a term sheet. T-Mobile shares were down 3.9%.

Streaming platforms accounted for 44.8% of total television usage in May, outpacing the combined share of broadcast and cable for the first tie ever, Nielsen said Tuesday. Alphabet's (GOOG) YouTube ( GOOG ) led the streamers at 12.5% of all TV viewing, followed by Netflix's ( NFLX ) 7.5% share and Walt Disney's (DIS) 5.0%. Amazon.com's ( AMZN ) Prime Video notched a 3.5% share, while Roku ( ROKU ) garnered 2.5%. Paramount Global's ( PARAA ) Paramount+ and Fox's (FOX) Tubi tied with 2.2% apiece. Warner Bros. Discovery ( WBD ) and Comcast's ( CMCSA ) Peacock rounded out the list at 1.5% and 1.4%, respectively, Nielsen said. Separately, Amazon ( AMZN ) said Tuesday it will host its extended Prime Day event from July 8 through July 11.

The Trump administration is discussing policies that would make it more difficult and expensive for pharmaceutical companies to advertise directly to patients, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. Banning pharma ads outright may leave the White House vulnerable to lawsuits, so the administration is focusing on creating legal and financial hurdles to discourage the practice, according to the report.

JPMorgan Chase ( JPM ) said Tuesday it is raising the annual fee on its Sapphire Reserve credit card to $795 from $550. JPMorgan ( JPM ) shares were down 0.3%.
