Top Midday Stories: Stocks Fall as Investors Await Trade Deal News; Tesla Shares Tumble on Musk Political Party Announcement
Jul 7, 2025 9:05 AM

11:48 AM EDT, 07/07/2025 (MT Newswires) -- All three major US stock indexes were down in late-morning trading Monday as investors awaited news on new trade deals after President Donald Trump said Sunday that the widespread tariffs announced in April would go into effect on Aug. 1 instead of the original July 9 date.

In company news, Tesla (TSLA) Chief Executive Elon Musk said Saturday he is forming a new political party to be called "America Party." Tesla shares were down 7% around midday.

CoreWeave ( CRWV ) will acquire Core Scientific ( CORZ ) in an all-stock deal valued at $9.0 billion, the companies said Monday. The deal is expected to close in Q4, subject to regulatory and Core Scientific ( CORZ ) shareholder approvals. Upon closing, CoreWeave ( CRWV ) said it expects Core Scientific ( CORZ ) shareholders to own less than 10% of the combined company. Under the terms of the acquisition, Core Scientific ( CORZ ) shareholders will receive 0.1235 newly issued shares of CoreWeave ( CRWV ) stock for each share of Core Scientific ( CORZ ), a premium of 66% over the target company's June 25 closing price, the companies said. CoreWeave ( CRWV ) shares were down 2.3%, while those of Core Scientific ( CORZ ) were down nearly 15%.

Shell (SHEL) said Monday it has tightened its Q2 production outlook for its integrated gas and liquified natural gas, or LNG, units, warning that trading and optimization is expected to be "significantly lower" than Q1. The energy giant said LNG production is now expected to be between 6.4 million and 6.8 million tons, compared to its previous guidance of 6.3 million to 6.9 million tons. For integrated gas output, Shell expects 900,000 to 940,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, compared to its previous guidance of 890,000 to 950,000 boe/d. Shares of Shell were down 2.6%.

IonQ ( IONQ ) said Monday it priced a $1 billion equity offering consisting of nearly 14.2 million shares of common stock priced at $55.49 per share and prefunded warrants to buy roughly 3.9 million shares of its common stock, each at $55.49 per pre-funded warrant, each representing a premium of about 25% to its closing stock price on July 3. The offering also includes seven-year warrants to buy roughly 36.0 million additional shares of common stock at an exercise price of $99.88 per share. The offered securities will be bought by Heights Capital management from the underwriter, IonQ ( IONQ ) said. Shares of IonQ ( IONQ ) were up by 0.5% in recent trading.

Apple ( AAPL ) said Monday it has filed an appeal against a 500 million euro ($586.3 million) fine imposed by the European Commission for alleged violations of the European Union's Digital Markets Act. The commission announced the fine in April, accusing the tech giant of imposing technical and commercial restrictions preventing developers from steering users to alternative payment methods outside the App Store. Apple ( AAPL ) shares were down 0.7%.

WNS (WNS) said Monday it has agreed to be acquired by Capgemini for about $3.3 billion, excluding debt. Under the deal terms, Capgemini will pay $76.50 per WNS share, reflecting a 17% premium to the company's July 3 closing share price. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2025, subject to regulatory and WNS shareholder approval, WNS said. Shares of WNS were up 14.1%.

BlackRock ( BLK ) said Monday it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire ElmTree Funds, a net-lease real estate investment firm with $7.3 billion in total assets under management. The upfront payment will be primarily in stock, with potential additional consideration tied to ElmTree's performance over the next five years, BlackRock ( BLK ) said. Other financial details were not disclosed. BlackRock ( BLK ) shares were down 0.2%.
