Top Midday Stories: Stocks Fall as US-Iran Ceasefire Hopes Fade; Health Insurance Stocks Rise After Big Medicare Advantage Payment Rate Bump

12:05 PM EDT, 04/07/2026 (MT Newswires) -- All three major US stock indexes were down in late-morning trading Tuesday, as President Donald Trump ratcheted up threats to Iran ahead of a deadline for ceasefire negotiations.

Trump said Tuesday on Truth Social that "a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again," ahead of the deadline he set for a deal with Iran. He added that he doesn't want that to happen, "but it probably will." Later, The New York Times reported that Iran has halted negotiation efforts and has informed Pakistan that it would no longer engage in ceasefire talks.

In company news, the stock prices of health insurance companies were up on Tuesday after the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or CMS, announced a bigger-than-expected increase to Medicare Advantage payments for 2027. The government will increase the average Medicare Advantage payment rate to 2.48% in 2027, higher than the 0.09% bump proposed in an advance notice on Jan. 26, CMS said. The increase would result in over $13 billion in additional Medicare Advantage payments in 2027, CMS said. Around midday, shares of UnitedHealth Group ( UNH ) , Humana (HUM) and CVS Health ( CVS ) were up 8.8%, 6.4% and 6.7%, respectively. Shares of Elevance Health ( ELV ) and Centene ( CNC ) were up 3.0% and 2.0%, respectively.

Gilead Sciences ( GILD ) said Tuesday it has agreed to acquire biotechnology company Tubulis for $3.15 billion in cash and up to $1.85 billion in contingent milestone payments. The acquisition will add Tubulis' antibody-drug conjugate platform and pipeline to Gilead's pipeline, the company said. Gilead shares were down 1.4%.

Apple ( AAPL ) is facing issues in the engineering test phase of its foldable iPhone that could delay production and shipment schedules, Nikkei Asia reported Tuesday, citing a source familiar with the matter. Apple ( AAPL ) shares were down 4.3%.

Amazon ( AMZN )-backed (AMZN) Anthropic said Monday it has signed a new deal with Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ) and Broadcom ( AVGO ) for multiple gigawatts of next-generation tensor processing unit capacity. Anthropic said it expects the capacity to come online in 2027. Alphabet Class C and Class A shares were up 0.4% and 0.3%, respectively. Broadcom ( AVGO ) shares were up 3.7%, while Amazon ( AMZN ) shares were down 1.2%.

Intel ( INTC ) said Tuesday on X it is joining Elon Musk's Terafab project alongside Tesla (TSLA), SpaceX and xAI to help refactor silicon fabrication technology. Intel ( INTC ) shares were up 2.2%.

Hologic ( HOLX ) said Tuesday that funds managed by Blackstone (BX) and TPG (TPG) have completed their acquisition of the company. Separately, a consortium of Blackstone and Tinicum have agreed to buy Senior at a value of roughly 1.28 billion pounds ($1.69 billion), Bloomberg reported Tuesday, citing a statement. Blackstone shares were up 0.2%, while TPG shares rose 0.6%.
