11:39 AM EDT, 08/15/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were down in late-morning trading Friday, while the Dow Jones was up, as investors digested weak consumer sentiment data.
The University of Michigan's preliminary consumer sentiment index fell to 58.6 in August from 61.7 in July, below expectations that called for an increase to 62.0, according to a survey compiled by Bloomberg as of 7:35 a.m. ET.
In company news, Berkshire Hathaway ( BRK/A ) (BRK.A/BRK.B) sold 20 million shares of Apple ( AAPL ) in Q2 and also bought over 5 million shares of UnitedHealth Group ( UNH ) , according to a 13F form filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday. Shares of Berkshire Class B were down 0.4% around midday, while those of Apple ( AAPL ) were down 0.7%, and those of UnitedHealth ( UNH ) were up more than 13%.
The Trump administration is considering taking a stake in Intel ( INTC ) with funds from the US Chips Act, Bloomberg reported Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. Separately, President Donald Trump said Friday he will set tariffs on semiconductors in the next two weeks and that they could be as high as 300%, according to media reports. Intel ( INTC ) shares were up 5.4%.
Applied Materials ( AMAT ) reported fiscal Q3 adjusted earnings late Thursday of $2.48 per diluted share, up from $2.12 a year earlier and above the FactSet consensus analyst estimate of $2.36. Fiscal Q3 revenue was $7.30 billion, up from $6.78 billion and above the FactSet consensus of $7.22 billion. For fiscal Q4, the company expects adjusted EPS of $1.91 to $2.31 on revenue of $6.20 billion to $7.20 billion. Analysts expect $2.39 and $7.33 billion, respectively. Applied Materials ( AMAT ) shares were down 13%.
Roblox ( RBLX ) is being sued by the state of Louisiana for allegedly failing to enforce safety controls to protect children and for allegedly facilitating the "distribution of child sexual material," Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said in a statement. Roblox ( RBLX ) shares were down 6.6%.
