Trudeau Confirms US Tariffs Delayed for 30 Days After Call With Trump
Feb 3, 2025 3:06 PM

05:30 PM EST, 02/03/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said late Monday that US President Donald Trump has delayed the implementation of his trade policy for 30 days.

"Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together," Trudeau said in a message on X, formerly Twitter. The US was earlier planning to implement 10% on energy imports and 25% on other imports from Canada from Tuesday.

Trudeau said Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl czar.

"We will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada-US Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering," Trudeau said on X.

"I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with CA$200 million," the Canadian prime minister said. Trudeau also said Canada will be implementing its CA$1.3 billion ($900 million) border plan.

"Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border," he said.

Trump and Trudeau spoke twice on Monday, with the second call being a followup to questions being raised in the first, Radio Canada International reported late on Monday. A spokesperson for Trudeau told CBC News the two leaders "spoke about trade and the border," the news report said.

The White House did not immediately comment on the call or on Trudeau's tweet, Bloomberg reported.
