Upcoming Big Tech Earnings Buoy Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Pre-Bell Tuesday

07:56 AM EDT, 04/23/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was up 0.3% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was 0.4% higher in Tuesday's premarket activity, buoyed by upcoming big tech earnings.

US stock futures were also higher, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.4%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advancing 0.4%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.4% before the start of regular trading.

The April PMI composite flash report from S&P Global will be released at 9:45 am ET, followed by the new home sales bulletin for March, and the Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index for April at 10 am ET.

In premarket action, bitcoin was down by 0.7% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 0.6% lower.

Power Play:

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) advanced 0.6%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) retreated 0.2% while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was inactive.

ImmunityBio ( IBRX ) shares were up more than 22% premarket after the company said late Monday ****the US Food and Drug Administration approved Anktiva plus Bacillus Calmette-Guerin for treating BCG-unresponsive non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.

Winners and Losers:

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) retreated 0.01%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) was 0.2% lower. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) gained 0.3%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) was also inactive.

Hibbett ( HIBB ) traded up more than 18% pre-bell after the company said that it has agreed to be acquired by the UK's JD Sports Fashion for about $1.1 billion in cash.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was up by 0.3%.

Calix (CALX) was down more than 15% before Tuesday's opening bell after the company reported Q1 non-GAAP net income of $0.21 per diluted share, down from $0.31 a year earlier.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 0.9%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.7% lower.

Oportun Financial ( OPRT ) was up more than 15% pre-bell Tuesday after the company reported preliminary Q1 sales late Monday that were above its initial guidance.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) gained 0.1%, and the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.1% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 0.7%.

Spotify Technology ( SPOT ) shares were up more than 8% in recent Tuesday premarket activity after the company swung to Q1 earnings and reported higher revenue than the prior year.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI), the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS), and the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) were inactive.

GE Aerospace (GE) shares were up 4.9% before the opening bell after the company reported Q1 adjusted earnings Tuesday of $0.82 per share, up from $0.27 a year earlier.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil was down 0.5% at $81.51 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas advanced nearly 0.1% to $1.79 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund (USO) lost 0.7%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 0.3% higher.

Gold futures for June retreated 1.4% to $2,314 an ounce on the Comex, and silver futures were down by 1.2% to $27.19 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) lost 1.1%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was 1.3% lower.
