06:43 AM EDT, 05/05/2025 (MT Newswires) -- US equity investors will focus on news on potential trade deals, especially with China, President Donald Trump's reaction to the monetary policy decision, and a flood of quarterly earnings this week.
* Trump signaled late Sunday that trade deals may come as soon as this week, Yahoo Finance reported. "We're negotiating with many countries, but at the end of this, I'll set my own deals -- because I set the deal, they don't set the deal," Trump was quoted as saying. "You keep asking the same question: 'When will you agree?' It's up to me, it's not up to them."
* "If we fight, we will fight to the end; if we talk, the door is open," Yahoo Finance reported last week, citing a statement by China's commerce ministry.
* At the peak earlier last month, markets were pricing about 125 basis points of cuts by year-end, and that has backed off closer to 75 basis points, Scotiabank said in a note to clients. "That may still be too much for [Federal Reserve Chair Jerome] Powell's liking."
* The Fed would pivot dovish if job market conditions worsen from their estimated longer-run 4% neutral unemployment rate and inflation risks easing below policymakers' 2% target, the Scotiabank note said. "By contrast, they would pivot hawkishly if the opposite were to happen. Should the two be in equal opposition to one another, then the FOMC may be forced into a position that does nothing for some time."
* Trump once again urged the Fed to reduce interest rates last week. In a social media post, Trump said there's "no inflation" in the US, while employment is strong.
* Investors will also look out for ISM services and jobless claims data, and Fed speeches this week.
* Expected corporate earnings for the week include Ford (F), Palantir ( PLTR ) , Advanced Micro Devices ( AMD ) , Disney ( DIS ) and Uber Technologies ( UBER ) .
