Wall St tumbles at open as Trump tariffs loom

(Reuters) - U.S. stock indexes opened sharply lower on Wednesday as investors awaited details of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs to assess their impact on the global economy, corporate earnings and inflation.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 342.35 points, or 0.82%, to 41,647.61, the S&P 500 fell 57.65 points, or 1.00%, to 5,577.02 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 241.23 points, or 1.38%, to 17,208.66.

Asian shares failed to follow a strong close on Wall Street with fears about the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus weighing on sentiment even as tame US inflation eased fears the Federal Reserve would rush to reduce its economic support. Oil prices were steady on Thursday following two days of gains after a call from the United States, the world's top oil consumer, for major producers to boost output reinforced supply concerns as economies ease their coronavirus restrictions. Brent crude futures edged higher by 5 cents to USD 71.49 a barrel by 0216 GMT while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gained by 4 cents to USD 69.29.
