Wall Street Set to Open Flat Friday as Investors Eye Earnings Reports, FOMC Member Speeches

09:21 AM EDT, 07/19/2024 (MT Newswires) -- US stocks look set to open flat in Friday's trading session as investors take in a raft of earnings reports coming out, including those from American Express ( AXP ) , Travelers Companies ( TRV ) , Comerica ( CMA ) , Halliburton ( HAL ) , and Fifth Third Bancorp ( FITB ) .

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were off 0.2%, S&P 500 futures nudged 0.1% higher, and Nasdaq futures were up 0.2%.

Investors will also be paying attention to speeches later in the day from Federal Open Market Committee members Raphael Bostic and John Williams to detect any hints of the Federal Reserve's future monetary policy decisions.

Oil prices were moving lower, with front-month global benchmarks North Sea Brent crude down 0.5% at $84.72 per barrel and US West Texas Intermediate crude declining 0.7% at $80.75 per barrel. The latest U.S. Baker Hughes Rig count, a key gauge of the oil drilling industry, will be released Friday afternoon.

In other world markets, Japan's Nikkei was off 0.2%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng tumbled 2.0%, and China's Shanghai Composite was up 0.2%. Meanwhile in Europe's early afternoon session, the UK's FTSE 100 was off 0.5%, while Germany's DAX 30 was off 0.6% and France's CAC 40 was down 0.4%.

In equities, shares of Augmedix ( AUGX ) soared more than 148% in Friday's premarket session after the company said it has agreed to be acquired by Commure in an all-cash deal valued at $139 million. 60 Degrees Pharmaceuticals' ( SXTP ) shares jumped 85% after it said it has signed clinical trial agreements for its study of tafenoquine to treat patients with babesiosis. Serve Robotics ( SERV ) shares jumped 67%, adding to Thursday's 12% gain. Shares of Hawaiian Electric Industries ( HE ) surged 45% after Bloomberg reported Thursday that the electric services company was among a group of firms that reached a tentative deal to settle lawsuits over last year's wildfires in Maui. And XWEL (XWEL) shares climbed 3% after a modest gain the previous session.

On the losing side, shares of Silo Pharma ( SILO ) plunged 25% after it said Friday that it launched a registered direct offering at $2.75 per share. Nauticus Robotics' ( KITT ) shares tumbled 21% after it said late Thursday that it will proceed with a 1-for-36 reverse stock split. Shares of Woodward (WWD) shed 0.2% following a modest loss on Thursday. Scholastic's (SCHL) shares fell 14% after it reported late Thursday lower fiscal Q4 adjusted earnings and revenue. And shares of CrowdStrike ( CRWD ) dropped 12% following media reports that the cybersecurity firm suffered a major outage resulting from an issue with its latest update.
