A week in review: Here are the top stories from this week
Aug 9, 2019 4:38 AM

A look back at some of our biggest and best stories from this week. In case you missed them, here's a recap:

1. Jammu & Kashmir Unrest: Government revokes Article 370, Article 35A

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government on Monday revoked Article 370 and Article 35A, which gives special rights and privileges to the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir in government jobs and land.

2. Abolition of Article 370: Why Kashmir is Amit Shah’s Sardar Patel moment

When Home Minister Amit Shah announced the scrapping of Article 370 on the floor of the Lok Sabha on Monday, there were many who were not surprised. Not because the Centre had made unprecedented arrangements in the valley ahead of the move, but because Shah was brought to the ministry precisely to implement the core agenda of the BJP.

3. Sushma Swaraj, popular former foreign affairs minister and BJP leader, passes away

Sushma Swaraj, a former foreign minister, and a veteran leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, has passed away after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. She was 67.

4. Best student, defiant lawyer, outstanding Parliamentarian —The other side of Sushma Swaraj

When Sushma Swaraj began her political career with the Janata Party, her detractors in the BJP called her an “outsider” to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the party’s ideological fountainhead. They labelled her a socialist nominee to the Janata Party government in Haryana under Devi Lal.

Swaraj, however, would say it was her husband Swaraj Kaushal who should be called a socialist and that her father, a prominent Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader, had been a ‘swayamsevak’.

5. RBI Monetary Policy: MPC cuts repo rate by 35 basis points; fourth in a row

The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) cut its key interest rate for the fourth successive time, reducing the repo rate by 35 basis points to 5.4 percent, to get the economy off its sickbed.

6. RBI loudly signals a pro-growth policy, but is it falling on deaf ears?

The RBI monetary policy did its best to boost the sagging sentiment in the economy but the verdict so far appears to be that the downturn in the economy is too severe for monetary policy to handle, no matter how sincere its intent and varied its approach.

7. Failure to amend 'the large loophole' may invite regulators to boardroom, warns IndiGo's Rakesh Gangwal

IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal has warned the airline's board that there is a real consequence of regulators stepping into the boardroom if the board does not decide to close "the large loophole" after the transition period.

8. Why do airlines deliberately overbook flights

Have you ever experienced being bumped? We mean buying a plane ticket, packing your bags, getting to the airport and then finding out that the airline has deliberately overbooked your flight and you no longer have a seat. Most of us hate when this happens, so why do airlines continue to do it?

9. 65% of millenials in India would consider new jobs to get more of this—and it’s not salary

When it comes to jobs, younger workers are looking for more than just money. And employers should pay attention.

10. To take or not to take — here’s a handy guide to resolving every traveller’s predicament

“To Take or Not To Take” is a conundrum that I’m sure every traveller who has checked into a posh hotel room has faced and acted upon. Haven’t we all pinched the occasional pen, the comb and the bath-gel mini-bottles believing it to be a harmless act? The problem arises when many travellers don’t realise that crossing the line is the difference between enjoying that complimentary chocolate on the pillow and taking the pillow home.
