"Premiumisation in the premium segment", will be a priority for Bajaj Auto, Rajiv Bajaj, the Managing Director of Bajaj Auto on Monday (September 18) said, and that ramping up capacity in the premium segment will be a focus area for the company.
Currently, Bajaj Auto has an 8 percent market share in the premium segment, which is above 200cc and has an average cost higher than 1.7 lakhs. The Pulsar RS, Dominar, Husqvarna and KTM are the premium offerings from Bajaj Auto, with the latest addition of Triumph Motorcycles. The company manufactures 8000 premium motorcycles per month.
Speaking exclusively to CNBC-TV18 Rajiv Bajaj said that Bajaj Auto would like to double capacity for manufacturing premium bikes to 35,000 per month by end of FY24. This includes at least 10,000 for the domestic market and another 15,000-20,000 for exports.
Bajaj Auto unveiled two Triumph motorcycles, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X in July. While Speed 400 has been rolled out commercially, the Scrambler 400X will go on sale from October. Bajaj said that bookings for Triumph have already exceeded 20000 units.
"Between July and August, we have manufactured 4000 Speed 400’s, out of which 2000 have been delivered and others will be delivered shortly. We are targeting dispatches of 4500 units of Triumph in September. By January, we should be able to take dispatches to 10000, including 3000 in exports of Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X," he said.
