Indian benchmark indices gained in the last hour of trade to end higher on Thursday, with Nifty settling above 11,250 levels led by gains in IT, metal and banking stocks. The Sensex settled 279 points higher at 37,393, while the Nifty50 added 100 points to end at 11,257. Among broader markets, Nifty Midcap and Nifty Smallcap were up 0.3 and 0.6 percent, respectively. Zee, BPCL, Bajaj Finance, IOC, and Ultratech Cement were among the major gainers on the Nifty50, whereas YES Bank, Bharti Airtel, IndusInd Bank, Cipla, and Coal India led losses. On the sectoral front, all except pharma were in the green, with Nifty Media being the biggest gainer, up 2.5 percent led by Zee (up 9 percent). Nifty Bank, Nifty, IT and Nifty Metal also gained over 1 percent each.
