Lok Sabha elections phase six: Campaign rhetoric heats up
May 9, 2019 11:49 AM

With three days to go for the sixth round of the Lok Sabha elections and 14 days before the verdict, there is no dearth of controversies and the campaign rhetoric is only getting uglier.

Addressing a rally at Bankura in West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is insulting the Constitution by saying that she is not ready to accept him as the prime minister of the country. Modi had earlier called Trinamool Congress 'extortionists' and Mamata had responded, saying she felt like giving him "a tight democratic slap". "Your slap will be a blessing," the prime minster later said.

The battle for East Delhi between Atishi Marlena of the Aam Admi Party and BJP's Gautam Gambhir took an ugly turn. Atishi accuses Gambhir and the BJP of distributing "derogatory pamphlets" against her. Gambhir hits back, says he will withdraw his candidature if Atishi proves her claims.

A day after Modi accused the late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi of using the INS Viraat for "personal holidays", former navy chief Admiral Ramdas clarified that “no ships were diverted for Gandhi family's personal use". The then bureaucrat in Lakshadweep confirms that Gandhis did come on a holiday but INS Viraat was not used for it.

Bharatiya Janata Party's Nitin Gakari has hit out at the Congress, accusing the party of "degrading the election campaign" and "diverting from the issue of development". Meanwhile, Janata Dal United's lawmaker Gulam Rasool Baliyavi says the National Democratic Alliance will not get a majority after the elections and the coalition must project Nitish Kumar as the prime ministerial candidate if it wants to form the government.
