In the 2016 Assembly elections, Palani was won by IP Senthilkumar of DMK.

Before that, in the 2011 elections, the seat was held by KSN Venugopalu, of AIADMK.

In the 2016 assembly polls, Senthilkumar garnered 100045 votes, securing over 50.66 percent of the vote share, and winning the seat by a margin of 25586 votes.

In percentage terms, the victory margin was 12.96 percent.

The constituency polled 197661 votes in the 2016 Tamil Nadu assembly polls with a voter turnout of 76.87 percent.

The Palani constituency has a literacy level of 76.85 percent.

A total of 24 candidates stood in the 2016 elections.
