Before that, in the 2011 elections, the seat was held by R. Perumal of AIADMK.

In the 2016 assembly polls, Palani garnered 101001 votes, securing over 42.77 percent of the vote share, and winning the seat by a margin of 10716 votes.

In percentage terms, the victory margin was 4.54 percent.

The constituency polled 236146 votes in the 2016 Tamil Nadu assembly polls with a voter turnout of 77.1 percent.

The Sriperumbudur constituency has a literacy level of 85.29 percent.
