In the 2016 Assembly elections, Cheyyar was won by Mohan K of AIADMK.

Before that, in the 2011 elections, the seat was held by N Subramanian of AIADMK.

In the 2016 assembly polls, Mohan K garnered 77,766 votes, securing over 37.78 percent of the vote share, and winning the seat by a margin of 8,527 votes.

In percentage terms, the victory margin was 4.14 percent.

The constituency polled 2,05,824 votes in the 2016 Tamil Nadu assembly polls with a voter turnout of 84.67 percent.

The Cheyyar constituency has a literacy level of 74.72 percent.

A total of 16 candidates stood in the 2016 elections.
