The Narendra Modi government is facing backlash in a few states over three legislations related to agriculture. The BJP's oldest ally and one of the founding members of the NDA, the Shiromani Akali Dal, has quit the government.

Union minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal has resigned from the cabinet, in protest against what the Akalis call 'anti-farmer ordinances and legislation'. Farmers in both Punjab and Haryana have been protesting against these bills for weeks now. They allege that the legislations, which were passed earlier this week in the Lok Sabha would lead to the dismantling of the minimum support price (MSP) system.

The three bills in question are aimed at enabling the farmer to sell his produce to any buyer and also accelerate agricultural growth through private sector investment. Farmers allege that there were no consultations held with them in the bill. They say that even a virtual consultation, or discussion of the subject on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mann Ki Baat would have helped them understand the nuances of the bill.
