Facebook to simplify privacy settings menu in the wake of Cambridge Analytica controversy

Facebook Inc. is looking simplify its privacy settings on mobile devices as it looks to contain the fallout of the data breach scandal, Bloomberg Quint reported.

The social media giant on Wednesday said that it was redesigning the settings menu on mobile devices to consolidate privacy options on one page, instead of sending users to multiple screens.

The new privacy menu will give the user control over the amount of information that will be stored by the site. This includes items deleted by the user along with other interests, besides letting people manage information that is used by the site for ads.

The new privacy options would still have limitations. Data that has already been shared to third party apps cannot be deleted. Similarly, data accessed by apps through games and quiz applications cannot be deleted either, as they are generally stored by the companies that provided the app.

“Last week showed how much more work we need to do to enforce our policies and help people understand how Facebook works and the choices they have over their data,” Facebook's Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan and Deputy General Counsel Ashlie Beringer said in a statement.

Facebook was dragged into a controversy after British political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, which worked with US president Donald Trump's election campaign, harvested data from 50 million users to allegedly sway voters.

The company stock has fallen over 18 percent after news of the breach came out earlier this month, wiping out more than $100 billion of its market value.
