On Wednesday, November 1, controversy ensued after BJP leader Sandeep Dayma said, at a public meeting in Tijara, Rajasthan, that it is "our religious responsibility" to uproot Gurdwaras. “A large number of Gurdwaras have come up recently in the Tijara region. They are going to become a big problem in future… So it is our religious responsibility to uproot these open sores from here,” Dayma remarked.
Dayma was seeking votes for BJP contestant Balak Nath. The controversial statement was made in the presence of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath.
The BJP leader had earlier issued a public apology. In a video, he said, “I don’t know how I committed this mistake. I cannot even think of disrespecting Sikhs, who are known to have protected Sanatan Dharma.”
