Senior Congress leader and former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda won in his stronghold Garhi Sampla-Kiloi constituency on Thursday by a massive margin of nearly 58,500 votes. Hooda secured 97,755 votes as of 5.01 pm as per data available on the Election Commission website. Hooda's nearest rival BJP's Satish Nandal bagged 39,256 votes, while Jannayak Janta Party's Dr Sandeep Hooda was at third place with 5,425 votes.

In terms of percentage, Hooda secured over 65 percent of votes, while BJP's Nandal got 26 percent of votes. JJP's vote share stands at 3.63 percent.

Satish Nandal had lost to Hooda in the 2014 polls as well by a margin of over 47,000 votes.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which was predicted by most exit polls to retain power in Haryana with a brute majority,

won 40 seats but failed to cross the halfway mark in the 90-member Assembly.

Also all the party's state ministers, except two, lost the polls, including Anil Vij and party chief Subhash Barala.

However, the rival Congress won 31 seats, while the less than 12-month-old Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), which broke away from the state's once major regional Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) owing to family disputes, won 10 seats.

The INLD won a lone seat against 19 in 2014 Assembly election. Eight independents have also won.

The counting of votes began at 8 am. Elections for the 90 seats in Haryana Assembly were held on October 21.

In the 2014 Assembly polls, the BJP improved its 2009 tally of four to 47 (33.2 percent vote share), followed by the INLD with 19 (24.11 percent) legislators and the Congress coming third with 15 (20.58 percent) seats against 40 in 2009 (35 percent).
