Japan PM Shinzo Abe's India visit postponed amid protests over CAB in Assam
Dec 13, 2019 12:26 AM

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's India visit has been cancelled for now amid protests over the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the country.

The protests have turned aggressive for the past few days, especially in Assam, as the people in the state feel that the bill would pave the way for an influx of Hindus from Bangladesh.

Raveesh Kumar, the spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, tweeted on Friday that Abe's visit to India has been postponed to "a mutually convenient date in the near future".

With reference to the proposed visit of Japanese PM @AbeShinzo to India, both sides have decided to defer the visit to a mutually convenient date in the near future.

PM Abe had planned to attend a summit-level meeting in Guwahati, Assam, which too has been postponed.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill became a law after it was approved by the President of India on Thursday night.

Two protesters lost their lives on Thursday in police firing on those defying the indefinite curfew.
