Karad South election 2019 results: Prithviraj Chavan of Congress looks set to defeat BJP's Atulbaba Bhosale
Oct 24, 2019 2:45 AM

Prithviraj Chavan of the Indian National Congress is leading Atulbaba Suresh Bhosale of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Karad South assembly seat in Maharashtra by 16,616 votes.

The Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections were the first since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's crushing win in the general elections in May.

While Chavan has secured 58,100 votes, Bhosale has secured 41,484, according to information available on the Election Commission website as of 06:19 PM.

Karad South in Satara district has been a bastion of Congress since 1960s. Chavan, who has been the chief minister of Maharashtra earlier, has had an eventful tenure. He was accused of targeting his own ally NCP, which eventually led to the collapse of his government.

Voting for the assembly elections was held on Monday.

The Congress appeared jaded during the campaigning for the elections. Except for former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, few leaders took part in rallies. The BJP, in contrast, approached the elections with what has become its trademark vigour.
