In the 2016 Assembly elections, Kharagpur Sadar was won by Dilip Kumar Ghosh of CPIM.

Before that, in the 2011 elections, the seat was held by Gyan Singh Sohanpal of INC.

In the 2016 assembly polls, Dilip Kumar Ghosh garnered 61446 votes, securing over 39.29 percent of the vote share, and winning the seat by a margin of 6309 votes.

In percentage terms, the victory margin was 4.03 percent.

The constituency polled 156487 votes in the 2016 West Bengal assembly polls with a voter turnout of 71.71 percent.

The Kharagpur Sadar constituency has a literacy level of 79.04 percent.

A total of 7 candidates stood in the 2016 elections.
