The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won an unprecedented mandate, winning over 300 seats. Fifteen of their leaders have won by over five lakh votes while the party managed a clean sweep in 10 states and union territories. The overwhelming mandate has ensured Prime Minister Narendra Modi will continue a second five-year term.

The BJP has significantly improved upon its vote share of 31.3 percent from five years ago to near 39 percent this year.

The overall vote tally has been propped up by some colossal wins by party leaders, with 15 of them heading to the lower house of Parliament with a winning margin of over five lakh votes.

It is a significant improvement from 2014 when six leaders achieved the feat.

BJP’s Navsari candidate C R Patil defeated rival Congress candidate Dharmesh Patel with a margin of 689,668 votes, the biggest difference this election. It narrowly missed the all-time record mark set by Pritam Munde, who won Beed by-election in October 2014 by 6.96 lakh votes.

Amit Shah won the Gandhinagar seat by a margin of 557,014 votes, breaking party patriarch Lal Krishna Advani’s record on the seat from five years ago.

Among others Ranjana Bhatt (Vadodara, Gujarat), Sanjay Bhatia (Karnal, Haryana) Krishan Pal (Faridabad, Haryana), Subhash Chandra Baheria (Bhilwara, Rajasthan), Shankar Lalwani (Indore, Madhya Pradesh), and Ramakant Bhargava (Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh) secured wins by margins of over 5 lakh ballots.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) also made a clean sweep of ten states and union territories. Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Daman & Diu, and Chandigarh have been completely painted saffron this year.

The alliance missed the clean sweep in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh by a mere two seats, and Karnataka by three.
