India is gearing up for the 17th Lok Sabha elections, which is scheduled to be held in less than 10 days from now. The elections will be held in seven phases -- between April 11 and May 19 -- involves more than 90 crore voters.
Every individual holding India's citizenship, not serving a jail term and above the age of 18, is eligible to vote. In the 2014 general elections, around 280 million people did not vote.
The poll panel will set up nearly 10.35 lakh polling stations in the country, as compared to nearly 9.28 lakh set up during 2014 polls. This marks an increase of 10.1 percent.
Nearly 39.6 lakh electronic voting machines and 17.4 lakh paper trail or voter-verifiable paper trail (VVPAT) machines would be used in these polling stations.
