Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2019, the Election Commission has been flooded with complaints about violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

The MCC is a set of voluntary guidelines issued by the Election Commission and enforced during the elections. It lays down rules prescribing the ideal conduct for political parties, candidates and party workers.

The Election Commission enforces the MCC from the day the election dates are announced announces until results are declared.

The code of conduct isn’t legally binding and does not have a prescribed punishment for violations. However, in some cases charges can be brought based on other acts and laws.
