With the Donald Trump administration reportedly mulling suspending a number of employment visas, including H-1B, the Indian IT sector is worried. To understand the impact of such a move CNBC-TV18 caught up with Shivendra Singh, vice-president of NASSCOM, to understand whether the move will impact renewals of visas or only fresh issuance.
Singh said that the impending move will impact global industry and its effect will not be limited to the IT sector. “First of all it is not only impacting the Indian IT industry, it will impact the global industry. So any company which utilise non-migrants visas, which include the H-1B as well as STEM OPT, will be impacted, and this is beyond the IT industry.”
He added that H-1B visas fill a very critical skill gap in the US and ensure that the world's largest economy remains competitive. “We need to look at the fundamental question as to why these H-1B visas are important. These H-1B visas are important because they fulfil a very critical skill gap which exists in the US for all companies and ensures that US economy remains competitive from a global perspective.”
Singh said that the impending move will not impact the H-1B visa holders already in the United States, but those attempting to re-enter the US could face issues.
“As we understand this is not impacting people who are in the US, so that is very important. But for people who may have come back here and have to go back – it will impact them as we understand. But we will need to see the fine print to be able to make the comment.”
