QS World University Rankings for Asia 2020: These are the top ten universities in India

SUMMARY

IITs, led by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, dominated the QS World University Rankings for Asia 2020. While IITs secured seven of the top ten positions, the remaining spots were held by IISC, Bengaluru, University of Delhi and the University of Hyderabad. These are the top ten universities in India:

10. University of Hyderabad: The university was founded in 1974. In January 2015, it received the Visitor's Award for the Best Central University in India.

9. IIT Guwahati: This was the sixth Indian Institute of Technology established in the country. The history of IIT Guwahati traces its roots to the 1985 Assam Accord signed between the All Assam Students Union and the government of India, which mentions the general improvement in education facilities in Assam and specifically the setting up of an IIT. 8. IIT Roorkee: The college was established in 1857 in British India by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason. It was formerly called Thomason College of Civil Engineering. It was converted to an IIT in 2001.

7. Delhi University: The university was established in 1922 by an Act of the Central Legislative Assembly and has 77 affiliated colleges and five other institutes.

6. IIT Kanpur: The college was established in 1960 and was one of the first IITs. The institute was created with the assistance of a consortium of nine US research universities as part of the Kanpur Indo-American Programme.

5. IIT Kharagpur: The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur was established in 1951. The students and alumni of IIT Kharagpur are referred to as KGPians.

4. Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru: IISc was established in 1909. The university has been on top of the NIRF rankings for three consecutive years.

3. IIT Madras: The college is located in Chennai and was founded in 1959. It was the third IIT that was established by the government of India.

2. IIT Delhi: Established in 1961, the college has also been given the status of Institute of Eminence which gave it full autonomy.

1. IIT Bombay: The college is known for its flagship four-year and five-year programmes for which the entry is through the Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced.
