Six years on, what has the ‘Crime & Protest’ taught us?

SUMMARY

On December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old was brutally gang raped on a moving bus and left on the roadside near Delhi’s Munirka area. She died at a hospital in Singapore two days later. The incident triggered a mass protests throughout the country. People came out on the streets, demanding justice for Jyoti Singh, who has since come to be known as Nirbhaya. Delhi police along with other law agencies came down hard on the angry population, subjecting the protesting crowd to indiscriminate tear gas shelling and baton charging. These images document the response of police on December 20, 2012, in New Delhi when citizens joined by political groups questioned the administration about the abysmal state of law and order in the country’s capital. Many protesters were injured and a policeman died due to heart failure. But the questions still arise on the crimes that take place on women and cases of rapes which are increasing in India. Shortage of sexual education and patriarchal society has forced the both rural and urban generation to have a sexual urge in its worst way. More Indians must come open to their children to educate on sex and specially train boys on behavioural issues with women. Homes are more responsible along with the schools. Before time runs out and we have a societal dent, it’s high time we gear up educating our generation while stopping the ‘political patriarchal provocations’ while educating that ‘masculinity’ is not to see a woman down but to respect and create a powerful society. Never to forget that Indian women never went through a Suffrage movement unlike the North America & England, from the birth of the Indian Constitution in 1950 women are in equal par with men in choosing a democratically elected member. If such heinous crimes led by some criminals in the name of ‘sexual urge’ doesn’t teach a society of over a billion people then there is some big error both politically and socially. The images are a reminder of the power of democracy.
