Actor-politician Gautami Tadimalla on Monday quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ending a 25-year association. In a letter dated October 23, Tadimalla expressed her disappointment, citing a lack of support from the party’s leadership during a personal crisis. She alleged certain members of the party sided with an individual, who betrayed her trust and swindled her life earnings.Tadimalla is not the only prominent figure to part ways with the BJP this year. Chandra Kumar Bose: Chandra Kumar Bose, the grandnephew of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, resigned from the BJP in September, citing insufficient backing from the central and West Bengal leadership in promoting Netaji’s ideology.
Narayan Tripathi: A four-time MLA, Tripathi accused the BJP of “double standards” and officially quit the party, vowing to fight the upcoming Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections on the platform of statehood for the Vindhya region.
Ramasimhan Aboobakker: Renowned Malayalam filmmaker Aboobakker quit the BJP in June, saying he was not going anywhere and would move with the "dharma", a reference to Sanatana dharma.
Rajkumar Somendra: Manipuri actor Rajkumar Somendra, also known as Kaiku, resigned from the BJP in September over the government’s “inept handling of the ethnic turmoil and the brutal murder of two students” in the northeastern state.
Raj Kumar Verka: Former Punjab minister and Dalit leader from Amritsar, Raj Kumar Verka, on October 13 returned to the Congress, criticising the BJP’s policies. “I have come to understand that only Congress can keep the country united,” the four-time MLA said.
Dr Gobardhan Das: A professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, he was a BJP candidate in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls. Dr Das distanced himself from politics after accepting a position as the Director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal, emphasising his distancing from any political affiliation.
Jagadish Shettar: Former Karnataka Chief Minister, Jagadish Shettar, resigned from BJP in April 2023 after being denied a ticket for Karnataka’s Hubballi-Dharwad central constituency. He went on to contest on a Congress ticket but lost his seat,
Malkhan Singh: Once a notorious dacoit, Malkhan Singh quit the BJP in August 2023. He joined the Congress in the presence of party leaders, marking a shift in his political affiliations.
A Chandrasekhar: In his resignation letter to the Telangana State BJP president, A. Chandrasekhar, a former minister, accused the leadership of not supporting those working for the party’s growth and criticised the Centre for failing to address issues related to Telangana. He quit the party in August 2023 and then joined the Congress.
Girija Shankar Sharma: Former Madhya Pradesh BJP MLA Girija Shankar Sharma, quit the BJP in September and pledged that he'd do everything to prevent party candidates from winning. He went on to join the Congress.
