26% candidates contesting in phase 7 West Bengal polls declared criminal cases against themselves: ADR
Twentysix per cent of the 284 candidates contesting in the phase seven of the West Bengal Assembly polls this year have declared criminal cases against themselves, a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms stated. The West Bengal Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the selfsworn affidavits of all 284 candidates from 36 constituencies contesting in the polls to be held on April 26.

Imams in Bengal urge EC to hold elections in Samserganj seat after Eid
Bengal Imams Association, the apex body of mosque committees in the state, on Monday urged the Election Commission to set a date at least three days after Eidulfitr for voting in Samserganj assembly seat, where polls were countermanded following the death of Congress candidate Rezaul Haque. Haque, who had contracted COVID19, died last Thursday.

Ahead of 6th phase polls in Bengal, state reports 8,426 new COVID-19 cases, highest single-day tally
Even as West Bengal campaigning for the sixth pahase of assembly elections ended todat at 6:30 pm; according to the Health Department data, the state reported highest single-day spike of 8,426 new COVID-19 cases, 38 fatalities, pushing death toll to 10,606.

Congress questions PM Modi on rallies as COVID-19 cases rise
With the country reeling under a second wave of coronavirus pandemic, the Congress on Monday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi for addressing poll rallies in West Bengal while "ignoring his responsibilities" at the Centre. The party also criticised Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan for his "condemnable" reply to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's letter giving suggestions to Modi to tackle the outbreak, saying the minister's response was inspired by politics. "Why is PM addressing 4 rallies in one day ignoring his responsibilities as PM? We all know what BJP's rallies are. Glitzy, multi-crore extravaganzas that are used to abuse the opposition parties," senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said.

Campaigning comes to an end for 6th phase of Bengal assembly polls
Curtain came down at 6.30 pm on Monday on the campaigning for 43 assembly constituencies of West Bengal which will go to polls on April 22 in the sixth phase of elections. In view of the rising cases of COVID19 in the state, the Election Commission (EC) has extended the silence period from 48 hours to 72 hours in each of the remaining three phases of the assembly polls to be held on April 22, 26 and 29.

EC transfers police heads of two Bengal dists ahead of sixth phase of poll
Ahead of the sixth phase of polls in West Bengal slated for April 22, the Election Commission on Monday removed superintendents of police of Purba Bardhaman and Birbhum districts and the xcommissioner of police of AsansolDurgapur police commissionerate. The poll panel removed Bhaskar Mukherji from the post of the superintendent of police of Purba Bardhaman, which goes to the poll in the sixth phase, and replaced him with Ajeet Kumar Singh, according to an order of the EC.
