Future Supply Chain will manage goods worth Rs 200k crore via distribution centers, says Kishore Biyani
Jan 13, 2019 11:34 PM

In line with its retail 3.0 strategy, Future Group would be investing Rs 1,000 crore to set up about 38 distribution centers in India that'll cater to food and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) under its 'India Food Grid' project.

CNBC-TV18's Priya Sheth visited one of the company's distribution center in Chandigarh and spoke to Future Group's top boss Kishore Biyani to understand the growth plans going forward.

“When we thought about the food business, 10,000 stores, Aadhaar Super Market as a rural distribution, we thought of how do we supply, where should our factories be and how can we make other people – who supply to us – participate in something. So the whole idea came was about how the electricity grids are and how power is generated somewhere and delivered somewhere, how can we create a network like that. That is how the whole idea came about creating integrated food distribution centers, wherein we manage all temperature control, all products which services around 200 kilometres within the radius and then we thought how can we create a national grid on it and then a regional grid and then the tertiary grid, which is city grids. Then we started investing in it and now we are ready with it. Out of 38 distribution centres, we have opened the fifth one and within the next three-four years, all 38 would be operational. Anybody can enter the grid anywhere, any part whichever is the nearest to the factories and the goods can be delivered to our entire chains. By that time, we should be having 10,000 small stores, 15,000 Aadhaar stores and multiple Big Bazaars,” Biyani said.

“It will be a Rs 1,000 crore investment to open up 38 centres like this,” he added.

Talking about the business plans and investment, Biyani said, “I believe the businesses which we will be able to give to Future Supply Chain in terms of distribution will be to the tune of around Rs 70,000 crore and another Rs 75,000-100,000 crore – they will be managing our other brands. So overall Future Supply Chain will distribute goods nearly close to Rs 200,000 crore from here."

2020 has been a brutal year for businesses, so much so that the volume of bankruptcies this year has surpassed that of 2008. From the travel and hotel space to the energy sector, businesses across industries suffered for months as the COVID-19-induced lockdown put brakes on economic activities across the world. However, retailers selling non-essential goods have been the worst-affected with many of these names emerging among the biggest bankruptcies of 2020. As per S&P Global Market Intelligence, 610 firms have filed for bankruptcies as of December 13, the highest since 2012. Retailers like J.C. Penney, Neiman Marcus, and J.Crew, car rental giant Hertz, mall operator CBL & Associates Properties are some of the names that have been listed in Fortune’s list of ‘14 of the biggest bankruptcies of 2020'. The 14 bankruptcies happen to be from the US as the valuations of liabilities remain higher than those of others. Here’s a look at these companies and their liabilities, as mentioned by Fortune:
