Apple, Google block TikTok: How effective is the ban?
Apr 17, 2019 1:52 PM

Apple and Google have blocked TikTok in India following an order from the government asking them to remove the video-sharing app from their app stores. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's order came after the Madras High Court investigated and determined that the app was encouraging pornography and other illicit content.

Now that both, Apple and Google have blocked the app, one will not be able to access and install the app through their app stores. However, one can share it with any such seeker through apps like ShareIt. Once the app is shared, the user can install the app and become a new user.

Besides, Android users will be able to download the app from unauthorised sources, which would create problems of hacking and phishing and other cybersecurity issues. The app is also accessible on other third-party app stores and can be downloaded.

But there are a lot of concerns on how much this ban is going to impact the existing user base as around 120 million users already have the app downloaded.

The order does not mention anything about the existing users but only restricts Apple and Google from having the app on their stores. The existing users can continue to use the app as they have been so far. However, it is yet to be seen if the government decided anything on the existing users of the app.
