India has officially confirmed a series of significant changes to its import regulations. These changes are set to usher in a new era of import management, specifically for laptops, tablets, and PCs.
Under the revised mechanism, importers will now be required to obtain import authorisations. This authorisation can be acquired by submitting detailed information regarding the value and quantity of their imports.
Sources told CNBC-TV18 that India is ensuring protection from digital threats aligns with the country's international commitments and that the import restrictions will not breach any international agreements.
These authorisations will remain valid until September 30, 2024, offering importers a clear timeline for their transactions, thereby introducing more stability into the import market.
In a significant move to promote local manufacturing, no import authorisation will be required for units produced within Special Economic Zones (SEZs).
To facilitate these changes, the DGFT has introduced an end-to-end online portal, emphasising its 'faceless' and 'contactless' attributes, making import management more efficient and accessible.
